‘I’m proud to be American’: 39 become U.S. citizens in Lincoln ceremony

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) — At the Sheldon Art Museum on Friday, 39 people took their oath of citizenship, one week before the United States marks its 250th anniversary.

The ceremony followed years of paperwork and interviews for the new Americans, who came from nearly every continent and variety of countries, including Cameroon, Mexico, Germany and Vietnam.

The event opened with a welcome from Sheldon Museum Director Susan Longhenry. Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird also attended.

Gaylor Baird said the city of Lincoln is home to more than 30,000 immigrants from more than 150 countries, adding that’s part of what makes Lincoln so diverse and inclusive…
