PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — A proposal that could ban right turns on red at up to 200 Portland intersections is drawing mixed reactions from residents, with city leaders arguing the change would improve safety while some drivers worry it could create unnecessary delays.
The ordinance, introduced by Portland City Councilmember Loretta Smith, would direct the Portland Bureau of Transportation to evaluate signalized intersections within the city’s High Crash Network and install “No Turn on Red” signs where traffic engineers determine they are warranted.
