WNBA Sparks Outrage by Leaving Caitlin Clark Off 30th Anniversary Poster

Additional Coverage:

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark was notably absent from the WNBA’s 30th anniversary poster, sparking criticism from fans-though the omission has a straightforward explanation.

The league has been in the spotlight this week following an altercation in a game between the Fever and Phoenix Mercury, where Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas struck Clark in the throat with a closed fist. Despite no foul being called during the game or at halftime, the WNBA later suspended Thomas for one game and assessed her a Flagrant Foul 2 retroactively.

Adding to the Fever’s challenges, Clark left the game in the third quarter after an awkward fall on her back. Fever head coach Stephanie White confirmed Clark will miss the upcoming Saturday matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks due to the injury.

As the WNBA celebrates its 30th season in 2026, Clark is widely regarded as one of the league’s brightest stars. Yet, when the league released its commemorative anniversary poster, Clark was not featured.

Instead, Sophie Cunningham represented the Fever. This decision drew swift backlash from fans on social media, with many creating and sharing their own versions of the poster featuring Clark, effectively “fixing” the original.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer expressed surprise at the exclusion, calling it “blown away,” while Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy questioned how the league could leave out “the most consequential player in the history of the league.”

The explanation behind Clark’s absence lies in licensing restrictions tied to her contract. Darren Rovell, founder of Cllct Media, clarified that Clark’s eight-year, $28 million deal with Nike prohibits other companies, including WinCraft-the maker of the anniversary poster-from using her likeness. Clark’s licensing agreement only permits use of her name and number by companies like WinCraft, preventing her image from appearing on such merchandise.

Rovell noted on social media, “The reason why Caitlin is not on this poster is… you ready? … Caitlin Clark herself.

Other than Nike, Clark allows licensees like Wincraft to only use her name and number. Not her likeness.”

Regarding Clark’s injury, Coach White reassured fans that while Clark will miss Saturday’s game, she is “doing alright.” White emphasized the priority is Clark’s long-term health and wellness, noting the team will use the upcoming week to focus on her recovery.

With Clark sidelined temporarily, the Fever will look to rally as they continue their season without one of their key players.
