JD Vance Faces Doubt Over Claim He Spoke to Pope Leo Recently

Questions Arise Over JD Vance’s Claims of Recent Conversations with Pope Leo XIV

JD Vance recently stated in a New York Times interview that he has been in direct communication with Pope Leo XIV over the past few months. However, this claim is now under scrutiny as Vatican insiders and experts express doubts about whether such conversations actually took place.

Two Vatican sources familiar with the Church’s diplomatic affairs told journalist and politician Christopher Hale, author of Letters from Leo, that they have no knowledge of any recent contact between Vance and the Pope. Hale’s own investigation found no official record of such communications, leading to skepticism within diplomatic circles.

During the interview, when asked by reporter Ross Douthat if he had spoken with the Pope recently, Vance initially avoided the question but then confirmed, “Have I spoken to the pope in the last few months? Yes.” He described his relationship with Pope Leo as “positive” but declined to share further details, citing confidentiality regarding private discussions.

Critics highlight the unusual nature of the claim, especially given the public tensions between President Trump, Vance’s political ally, and Pope Leo. Earlier this year, Trump openly criticized the Pope’s stance against the war in Iran, branding him “weak” after the pontiff condemned the President’s harsh rhetoric toward Iran.

The Vatican typically publicizes the Pope’s conversations with world leaders, issuing official statements following calls with figures such as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, French President Emmanuel Macron, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum. The absence of any Vatican acknowledgment regarding Vance’s claimed contact adds to the controversy.

Social media users have reacted strongly, questioning why Pope Leo has not addressed the matter and accusing Vance of dishonesty. One commentator wrote, “Scumbag Vance should not be able to lie at will about the Pope,” while another noted, “He lies about talking to the pope. Par for the course.”

Dr. Pattenden, a Catholic Church expert, weighed in on the broader political implications, noting that attacking the Pope is often a political misstep.

“The risk of alienating Catholic voters in a place like the United States is very substantial,” Pattenden said, emphasizing the emotional connection many Catholics have with the pontiff. Despite this, President Trump secured a majority of Catholic votes during his successful 2024 re-election campaign.

As the debate continues, the truth behind JD Vance’s assertion remains unclear, with no official confirmation from the Vatican and ongoing speculation about the nature of his relationship with Pope Leo XIV.
