CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA — The Storm Prediction Center has expanded its severe weather risk area for Saturday June 27, 2026, upgrading much of North Carolina and parts of South Carolina to a Level 2 of 5 Medium risk as an upper-level storm complex approaches from the west. The expanded zone places Charlotte and the eastern Carolinas under the highest threat, with damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and torrential downpours all possible as the very hot and humid atmosphere fuels strong to severe storm development through the afternoon and into the evening hours.
Two-Tier Risk Zone Spans a Massive Region
The severe weather outlook covers an enormous swath of the eastern United States, divided into two distinct threat levels. A Level 1 Marginal risk zone stretches across a broad corridor from Kansas City and St. Louis through Indianapolis, Nashville, and Atlanta, covering much of the central and southern Midwest and upper South.
Embedded within that larger zone, the Level 2 Medium risk is focused specifically on the Carolinas, centered on Charlotte and extending eastward through much of North Carolina and into coastal South Carolina, where the atmosphere is expected to be most unstable and supportive of organized severe storms.
Primary Threats and Timing by Region
The three main hazards with any storms that develop are damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and torrential downpours capable of producing localized flash flooding. Timing differs depending on location within the Carolinas.
The western Carolinas face their highest storm chances between 2PM and 5PM, while the eastern Carolinas remain under threat through the evening hours as the storm complex continues its eastward progression toward the coast.

Forecasters are already flagging a potential repeat of this pattern on Sunday as the heat ridge continues to strengthen across the region.
