Cannon fire marks 250th anniversary of Battle of Sullivan’s Island

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) —The sounds of cannon fire echoed across Charleston Harbor Saturday, marking 250 years since a pivotal moment in American history the Battle of Sullivan’s Island.

On June 28, 1776, American forces defended a palmetto log fort now known as Fort Moultrie against the powerful British Royal Navy. Despite being outmatched, the Americans secured a major victory that helped protect Charleston and boost morale just days before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
