A night for Rhode Island journalists to celebrate and a photo worth a second look

I had to forgive myself for not noticing. After all, so much was coming at me on the last night of the 2025 legislative session — from reporters’ separate Slack messages to a google doc fitfully taking shape. So when freelance photographer Michael Salerno sent me the Dropbox link to his photos from the Rhode Island State House, I uploaded them into WordPress and captioned them as fast as I could.

From his vantage point on the Senate floor, Salerno took several photos of Second Amendment supporters in yellow shirts and gun control advocates in red and orange shirts up in the gallery. I added them to a collection of images that ran at the end of our reporting team’s coverage of a marathon day.
