Iditarod sign-ups open: Iditarod founder’s great-grandson signs up for historic race at first chance

WASILLA, Alaska (KTUU) – More than 50 years ago, Joe Redington Sr. set out to preserve a 1,000-mile trail from Knik to Nome t and preserve the method of transportation that was used to do so: sled dogs. Thus, ‘The Iditarod’ was born and Redington Sr. helped put on the first race in 1973.

Now, his great-grandson is following in his trail. Isaac Redington signed up for the 2027 Iditarod at the annual volunteer picnic Saturday to become a 4th generation Redington to travel the trail.
