Travel Expert Shares 3 European Spots Perfect for a Summer Getaway

Additional Coverage:

Having traveled extensively across Europe, I’ve gathered a few standout destinations that are perfect for summer getaways. Among my favorites are Gozo, an island near Malta known for its delicious cuisine, scenic hikes, and breathtaking beaches; Hvar, a vibrant Croatian island; and Comporta, a tranquil beach town in Portugal.

My passion for travel began at 21 with a memorable girls’ trip to Iceland, sparking a lifelong love for crafting the ideal itinerary. Since then, I’ve explored numerous European countries-from Spain and Germany to Slovakia-and now work as a travel consultant. I delight in uncovering unique destinations to share with clients and revisit myself.

If you’re planning a European trip this summer, here are three exceptional places worth considering:

Comporta, Portugal: A Serene Coastal Escape

Located about 75 miles south of Lisbon, Comporta is a charming village that offers white-sand beaches, pine forests, and crystal-clear waters. During my visit, I enjoyed soaking up the sun at Praia da Comporta and Praia do Pego, both featuring pristine ocean views and excellent beach clubs nearby.

A particular favorite was Comporta Café Beach Club, nestled among the dunes and serving traditional Portuguese seafood that was simply unforgettable. One of the trip’s highlights was horseback riding along the beach, offered by a local equestrian school-where I even learned Madonna frequents the area.

For those seeking a blend of tranquility, delightful cuisine, and a touch of adventure, Comporta is a true hidden gem.

Gozo, Malta: A Unique Island Experience

Though Malta was on my radar for some time, its sister island Gozo pleasantly surprised me with its dramatic coastline and relaxed atmosphere. Reaching the island was easy, just a brief ferry ride from Malta, and upon arrival, I was captivated by the scenic beauty.

Local recommendations led me to Maxokk Bakery, famous for its ftira-a traditional Maltese flatbread sandwich worth waiting for. I sampled a tuna ftira and anchovy pizza, both delicious. Afterward, I visited Ramla Bay, a striking red-sand beach, and hiked up to Mixta Cave, which offers stunning views overlooking the bay-a highlight of the trip.

Next time, I hope to spend more time exploring Gozo’s charming villages like Xlendi and Marsalforn, to enjoy seaside dining, diving, and other natural wonders.

Hvar, Croatia: A Vibrant Island Retreat

While exploring Croatia, both Split and Dubrovnik impressed me, but Hvar truly stood out. This beautiful island in the Adriatic Sea is easily accessible with a short ferry ride from Split.

Accommodation options abound, and we stayed in a lovely Airbnb mere steps from the waterfront in Hvar Town. The local seafood was exceptional; memorable dining experiences included Mamato Bar, known for relaxed lunches with ocean views, and Laganini Lounge Bar and Fish House, a slightly upscale venue reached by boat, featuring Dalmatian cuisine and live DJ performances.

Hvar also boasts a lively nightlife scene, with spots like Carpe Diem Beach Hvar and Hula-Hula Beach Bar offering spectacular sunsets, dancing, and refreshing drinks.

For travelers looking to balance relaxation with vibrant nightlife, Hvar is an excellent choice.

In sum, whether you’re drawn to Comporta’s peaceful beaches, Gozo’s natural charm, or Hvar’s energetic vibe, these three European destinations promise unforgettable summer experiences.
