N.Y. weather: Extreme heat watch issued for NYC leads to July 4 weekend

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New Yorkers should prepare for dangerously hot and humid weather this week as the National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat watch beginning Wednesday afternoon.

The agency said heat index values could reach as high as 108 degrees across the five boroughs during the watch, which remains in effect from noon Wednesday through 9 p.m. Friday.

The National Weather Service warned that the combination of intense heat and humidity could significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among older adults, people with chronic health conditions and those work or spend time outdoors…
