FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – City officials and residents gathered in the East Central neighborhood Monday to dedicate a new mural created by a local artist as part of a public art initiative.
Near the intersection of Coombs and Liberty Streets, the mural created by Fort Wayne’s own Julie Wall and titled, Rich History, Bright Future is a nod to the people who lived in the neighborhood before it became what we know it as today.
The East Central neighborhood was first home to the members of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, as reflected in the ribbons in the mural, along with the sandhill cranes and plants that are significant to the Miami Tribe’s culture. Silhouettes of all ages depict the people who have lived in the neighborhood throughout history, including Fort Wayne’s first black city councilman, John Nuckols.
The mural’s commission is part of the city’s ShoutOut: Fort Wayne, a public art initiative that celebrates the history and identity of the city’s neighborhoods…
