With record‑high temperatures expected across the region this week, Camp Notre Dame is taking extra steps to keep campers safe while still delivering the full outdoor summer experience families expect.
Summer Director Rachael Passauer, who has worked at the camp in various roles since 2011, said many of the camp’s activities already take place in naturally shaded areas. But with extreme heat on the way, staff are adding cooling stations, adjusting schedules, and increasing hydration breaks.
“Luckily, though we are outside all week, a lot of our activities are just naturally in the shade,” Passauer said. “We have our cool pool that everybody loves. We have water blaster battles already planned throughout the week… water cannons throughout camp, freezy pops, and a few misting stations.”
Passauer said she monitors seven weather apps to track conditions and alerts staff ahead of time when heat waves are expected. Counselors are encouraged to slow down activities, move events off the blacktop, and keep campers rotating between shade and water‑based activities…
