Dangerous heat prompts cooling centers across Middle Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Heat index values are expected to reach 110 degrees across Middle Tennessee this week, prompting emergency officials to activate cooling centers and outreach services for residents needing relief from the dangerous temperatures.

Metro Nashville’s Office of Homeless Services has activated its extreme heat response in coordination with the Office of Emergency Management. Outreach teams will conduct heat patrols from 8 a.m. until noon, distributing water, sunscreen, insect repellent and providing transportation to cooling shelters for people experiencing homelessness.

Several organizations across Middle Tennessee are expanding services throughout the week. See our list below:

Nashville Cooling Centers

Room In The Inn Hope U Day Center

  • Location: 705 Drexel Street
  • Hours: Monday-Friday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nashville Rescue Mission

  • Location: 616 Seventh Ave. S.
  • Open: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year

Community Care Fellowship

  • Location: 511 S. Eighth Street
  • Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Nashville Public Library

  • Location: 21 locations across Davidson County
  • Hours: Vary on location. Check hours for each location here.

Clarksville Cooling Centers

Manna Cafe

  • Location: 605 Providence Boulevard
  • Hours: Additional hours during Heat Advisories. Check hours here.

Loaves & Fishes

  • Location: 825 Crossland Avenue
  • Extended hours until 3:30 p.m. during heat advisories. Check hours here.

Old Firehouse Day Shelter

  • Location: 1498 Golf Club Lane
  • Hours: Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Salvation Army

  • Location: 210 Kraft Street
  • Hours: Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Clarksville Area Urban Ministries

  • Location: 217 S 3rd Street
  • Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

Recreation Centers & Libraries

  • Location: Various location for the community centers and all Montgomery County libraries.
  • Hours: Community center hours vary on location. Check hours here. Library hours Sunday from 1-5 p.m., Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and Friday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

Wilson County Cooling Center

Wilson County Emergency Management has also opened a cooling center at the Wilson County FG Building.

  • Location: 914 Tennessee Boulevard, Q Barn inside the Wilson County Fairgrounds
  • Hours: Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Subject to change)

Heat Safety Tips

Health officials recommend:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and family members.
  • Never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle.
