Thornton Fire responding with whole blood for trauma, bleeding

THORNTON, Colo. (KDVR) — Thornton Fire announced Monday that they officially have a designated truck and safety and medical officer ready to go with whole blood in tow during calls where patients might need a transfusion.

“Things like blunt trauma, car accidents, falls, penetrating trauma, gunshot wounds and stabbings,” Theo Gonzales, the EMS Chief with Thornton Fire, said.

The agency did a demonstration on how whole blood would be transfused into a patient. The blood is carried in a cooler that sits between 30 and 42 degrees. Once an IV is placed in the patient, the blood is warmed up in another piece of equipment, then travels into the patient via the IV.
