Defense in Genesis Mata case drops competency challenge, criminal proceedings reinstated

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Defense counsel for Ray Mata Jr. won’t seek a second opinion on his competency to stand trial in the torture slaying of his 8-year-old daughter.

Criminal proceedings were reinstated Tuesday afternoon against Mata — found competent by a psychologist in April — after a public defender indicated he won’t challenge that determination.

Also Tuesday, Mata and co-defendant Graciela Bustamonte were assigned a trial date of Sept. 21 on charges of first-degree murder, torture and other crimes in the death of 8-year-old Genesis Mata…
