Charlotte med student makes cross-country bike trip in honor of grandfather battling cancer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Charlotte medical student is nearly finished with a cross-country bike ride motivated by a close relative with cancer.

On the 54th day of his journey across America, John-Hewlett “JH” West had a cheering section of friends to greet him.

The Wilmington native stopped at Charlotte’s Wake Forest University School of Medicine Tuesday, where he’ll start his second year in August.

Back on May 7, West was in Oregon. He got on his bike and rode east.

“It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” West said. “[Thought] about getting to hug my family when I get to the coast. I won’t lie, I thought about that a good deal.”…
