CAMPBELL COUNTY, Ky. (WKRC) – Drivers in Campbell County who say a state road has been eroding for years are getting action after raising concerns about holes in a bridge and sections of pavement falling toward a creek.
The road is Kentucky Route 1997, which is located just off the AA Highway. A cone has been placed over a hole in a bridge where drivers can see into the creek below, and barrels have been set up where the road is falling into the creek—and late Tuesday, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced it was closing the road to through traffic “out of an abundance of caution.”
That move came after Local 12 reached out after hearing concerns from Alexandria resident Doug Schweitzer, who drives the route at least twice a week to get to church. He said he has noticed the deterioration for about two years and contacted the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet but felt his concerns were not being addressed.
“Wait a minute, I said, ‘Ma’am, you don’t understand how dangerous this situation is.’ I got the same answer. I said okay,” Schweitzer said. “It’s scary, but what if someone goes through here who’s not familiar with it? And what if someone comes through here not familiar at night?”…
