MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A time capsule sealed beneath Mobile’s Colonial Fort Condé for nearly 50 years will be opened this Sunday, July 5, as America marks its 250th birthday.
Admission is free at the History Museum of Mobile that day, including Fort Condé. The fort opens at 1 p.m., with events beginning at 4 p.m.
Reenactment of James Willing capture
The afternoon begins with a reenactment of the capture of James Willing, an American patriot who led raids against British forces along the Mississippi River. In 1778, Willing stopped in British-controlled Mobile and distributed copies of the newly adopted Declaration of Independence. British authorities arrested him for treason against the Crown.
Time capsule opening
