Danny Glover Opens Up About Living with Alzheimer’s Disease
Veteran actor Danny Glover, best known for his iconic role in the “Lethal Weapon” series, has publicly shared that he is living with Alzheimer’s disease. At 79 years old, Glover revealed his diagnosis during a heartfelt interview on the “Today” show, reflecting on his storied career, family, and the challenges ahead.
“I’ve been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s,” Glover stated candidly. He explained that the illness has begun to impact his movement, speech, and memory, but emphasized his determination to face it head-on. “I can live with it, in a sense,” he said.
When asked about the fear of losing his memories, Glover acknowledged the inevitability of change as the disease progresses: “I’m sure as it advances, things are going to be… different and changing.”
Glover’s distinguished career spans nearly 200 film and television credits, earning him an honorary Oscar in 2022, just before his diagnosis. Despite the increasing effects of Alzheimer’s, he remains active in public life and committed to his community work.
The decision to share his diagnosis publicly was made to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s. His daughter, Mandisa Glover, emphasized the importance of his openness: “We all get old.
It happens. That’s what I think is important, you know, that he tells his story.
That he has ownership of his life.”
Alzheimer’s disease affects more than 7 million Americans aged 65 and older, progressively damaging memory and cognitive function, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Before his breakthrough in Hollywood, Glover discovered his passion for acting at San Francisco State University, encouraged by playwright Amiri Baraka. His role as Detective Roger Murtaugh in the “Lethal Weapon” franchise propelled him to international fame. Glover recalled a humorous anecdote about fans bringing unusual items, including a toilet, for him to autograph.
Among his many roles, Glover holds the film “Places in the Heart” (1984) closest to his heart. The movie carries special significance, as he learned of his casting on the same day his mother tragically died in a car accident-a loss he has honored throughout his career.
Beyond acting, Glover has made significant contributions as a co-founder of Louverture Films, a production company dedicated to telling socially conscious stories from underrepresented communities. “We have challenges in the world, and I think art becomes a refrain, a way of looking at that,” he reflected.
Looking ahead, Glover remains committed to inspiring younger generations and continuing his advocacy work. “Talking to young people and their responsibility,” he said when asked about his future goals. When reminded he still has much to teach, he smiled and added, “Well, and lots to learn as well.”
Despite the challenges Alzheimer’s brings, Danny Glover’s resolve to use his voice for good and influence positive change remains unwavering.
