VFW Post 9095 Gives Vets a Place to be Vets

Don Croswhite stood beside a table at the Veterans of Foreign Wars W. Carl Reed Post 9095 in Little Rock and explained its meaning in a voice halting but earnest. Flanked by a chair that will never be filled and set for a meal in symbol only — a candle, a rose, a Bible, a lemon, salt — the display honors prisoners of war and those missing in action, soldiers who never made it home.

“The seat is empty because he isn’t here anymore,” Croswhite said. “The salt represents the tears of those who are here. The glass is upside down because they can’t use it anymore. The rose is for hope that they will come back, and the light is there for when they do.”…
