A bellflower is an herbaceous plant celebrated for its distinctive bell-shaped blooms. It’s also the name of a smart new art and antiques shopping destination on St. Charles Avenue. Inspired by the floral motifs that adorned 18th-century furniture and architecture, The Bellflower pays homage to the craftsmanship of the past while embracing an old-world sense of community reimagined for a new generation of collectors, dealers and design enthusiasts.
Housed in the former Heirloom Furniture building, the 5,800 square foot shop is the latest venture from the savvy entrepreneurs behind Crescent City Auction and Consign Consign. But make no mistake; this iteration sets itself apart. Conceived as an elevated retail experience, the space celebrates each independent seller’s aesthetic while maintaining a cohesive, gallery-like atmosphere. Each vendor is hand-picked by the owners for their distinctive point of view and discerning eye. The result feels elevated, intentional, and organic, eschewing the visual clutter often associated with multi-vendor marketplaces.
Still, with 21 dealers and counting, there is plenty to see. Anchoring the collective are New Orleans esteemed veterans like Dunn& Sonnier, Soniat Antiques, Guy Lyman Fine Art, and Antiques on Jackson. Newer to the New Orleans scene are vendors like Sarah & Elijah Antiques (a husband-and-wife combo), Alabama based dealer, Collected, costume jewelry dealer, Hummingbird in the Attic and Objects of Affection. It feels like less of a customer grab and more of a group effort. Lambert adds, “In the past, dealers had to be more competitive with each other, siloed in their own storefronts. In our space, it’s a shared goal to get customers in the door. It’s fun to see that kind of comradery and community.”
When I asked owner Adam Lambert how the project came together, he pointed to several converging factors. Chief among them, the cost of commercial real estate, which has made independent storefronts increasingly unattainable for many dealers. He also cited the rise of the social media dealer; a new generation of tastemakers with thriving online businesses who still value a physical space for clients to experience their collections firsthand. For both, the Bellflower bridges the gap with a cost-efficient retail model and coveted location on one of the most hallowed streets of New Orleans.
