Washington D.C. officials are advising residents to wear masks ahead of President Donald Trump’s Fourth of July fireworks event, as experts warn the celebration could create hazardous air quality in the area.
The president, 80, has promoted the July 4th fireworks at his Great American State Fair as the “LARGEST FIREWORKS SHOW IN HISTORY.” This event, commemorating the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, is scheduled to begin around 10:30 or 11 p.m. on the National Mall, following a lengthy speech by Trump. According to Freedom 250, the White House-supported group organizing the event, approximately 850,000 fireworks will be launched during the 40-minute show.
However, while Trump emphasizes the grandeur of the display, health experts and internal National Park Service documents reviewed by The Washington Post raise concerns about the environmental impact. The fireworks are expected to produce significant air pollution, with levels deemed “very unhealthy” for downtown D.C., Arlington, and the Capitol Hill area. The Park Service advises the public to “avoid prolonged exposure” to the pollution.
Fireworks release fine particulate matter that can penetrate deep into the lungs and heart, potentially triggering irritation, asthma attacks, and other health issues. The Park Service’s draft air-quality report predicts that elevated pollution levels may linger for three to six hours after the show.
George Thurston, a professor of medicine and population health at New York University, recommends wearing an N95 mask to reduce inhalation of harmful particles. He also advises individuals with respiratory conditions to stay indoors during the event and wait until the smoke clears before going outside.
The Park Service’s guidance includes wearing N95 masks outdoors and limiting time spent outside during and after the fireworks display.
President Trump, who is headlining the event after scheduled musical performers withdrew, has described the celebration as the “most spectacular TRUMP RALLY of them all” in a post on Truth Social. He called the fireworks a “TRIBUTE TO AMERICA” and urged Americans not to miss what he claims will be the largest fireworks show ever held in the nation’s capital.
