4 health care groups compete for 92 acute care beds in western North Carolina

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Four health care providers in western North Carolina have filed applications with the state’s Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) to add acute care beds, state officials announced Thursday.

This comes after the 2026 North Carolina State Medical Facilities Plan recognized the need for 92 acute care beds in a cluster of western North Carolina counties, including Buncombe, Clay, Graham, Madison and Yancey.

Mission Hospital is one of the four providers seeking to develop 92 additional beds at its Asheville hospital. This project would cost $66.8 million and be completed in January 2032…
