Independence Day celebration to be fun, festive and hot

The Town of Hillsborough, in partnership with Orange County, has planned a full slate of activities, attractions and entertainment this weekend, to help celebrate Independence Day and the nation’s 250th birthday.

Many of the “Together We Are America” events will take place downtown at River Park, where an eclectic collection of musicians will fill the bill. More than 40 arts and crafts vendors will show off the fruits of their labor, and attendees will have a chance to contribute their own creative touch to the River Park ARTch. The sculpture, that for years has graced the park’s main entrance at Churton Street, recently was stripped to its metal frame. Fabric has been woven into the structure and festival goers will be able to add to the arch’s new look.

“People have been working on it during the past few Last Friday Art Walks, and the Fourth of July will be the final day to add to it,” said Katie Murray, director at the Orange County Arts Commission, which has played a prominent role in pulling together this weekend’s festivities. “It’s a hands-on activity for the community to participate in. Obviously it’s fabric, it’s not intended to last a long time, and so we are already talking with the town and the Hillsborough Arts Council about getting a new call out for something to replace the arch, or it could be something that incorporates the existing frame, but is more permanent.”…
