Palm Beach County officials urge fireworks safety ahead of 4th of July celebrations

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — If you’re planning to light your own fireworks for America’s 250th anniversary, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue is urging residents to “leave it to the pros” and attend a public fireworks show instead.

PBCFR says if a fireworks show isn’t in your plans, firefighters are asking residents to remember the risks. Fire Rescue says fireworks can cause lifelong injuries, especially to the hands, face and ears.

Fire Rescue cites that last year, about 15 people died and nearly 13,000 were injured nationwide because of fireworks misuse or malfunctions. Sparklers alone accounted for about 1,300 emergency room injuries. Instead of giving sparklers to young children, PBCFR recommends using glow sticks or crafts instead…
