ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, communities across the country are reflecting on the people, events and cultures that helped shape the nation.
In northern Illinois, many of the names seen on road signs, county buildings and city welcome signs offer a direct connection to American history, from the Revolutionary War to westward expansion and the region’s Native American heritage.
Long before Illinois became a state in 1818, the area was part of French-controlled “Illinois Country” and later came under British control following the 1763 Treaty of Paris.
