Trump’s Great American State Fair Shuts Down Amid Dangerous Heat Wave

Additional Coverage:

President Donald Trump’s Great American State Fair was forced to close on Friday due to dangerously high temperatures, resulting in a swift evacuation of the few attendees remaining at the event.

The East Coast heat wave, with temperatures soaring near 100 degrees, interrupted the fair-a multi-week celebration of America’s 250th birthday held on the National Mall-that has struggled with low turnout and operational issues since its opening. Fox reporter Bill Melugin noted on social media that the fair was postponed until 5 p.m. “for what we believe are heat-related reasons” as conditions outside felt like a sauna.

Reports indicate that air conditioning failures affected some exhibits amid the scorching heat, and a staff member mentioned several people experienced heat stroke, though this has not been independently confirmed. The extreme weather and power difficulties mark the latest challenges for the event, which has also faced performer cancellations and sparse crowds.

CNN correspondent Tom Foreman previously highlighted intermittent power outages and cooling system failures at the fair. Images from the event showed attendees attempting to cool off with wet towels and standing near ice piles, underscoring the harsh conditions. One report claimed that due to the loss of air conditioning, some workers abandoned their posts, leaving attendees to manage on their own.

Participation has been uneven, with some states, particularly those led by Democratic administrations, choosing not to staff their booths in protest of the fair’s MAGA-associated theme. In some cases, exhibits were left nearly empty-Alaska’s display reportedly consisted only of a rug and small table, while Connecticut, Maine, and Hawaii had minimal setups with just a couple of chairs. Washington and Oregon declined to participate altogether, citing various reasons including budgetary concerns.

As the heat wave is expected to continue through the Fourth of July weekend, with several days forecasted to exceed 100 degrees, attendance at the Great American State Fair remains sparse, according to aerial images. The extreme weather, combined with ongoing logistical issues, has cast a shadow over this national celebration.
