Lincoln Commuters Lose a Shortcut to Make Way for Massive Transit Center

A block of H Street in downtown Lincoln would be vacated—absorbed into the footprint of a new Multi-modal Transportation Center near the County-City Building, and eliminating a westbound shortcut that drivers currently rely on.

According to the Planning Commission staff report, the City of Lincoln and Lancaster County are jointly petitioning to vacate the entire H Street right-of-way between S. 9th and S. 10th Streets—roughly 27,278 square feet of roadway—to make room for the new transit center on the County-City surface parking lot south of 605 S. 10th Street.

The vacation would close the only westbound connection on that block. Drivers heading north on S. 10th Street who want to go west will need to continue to L Street instead—a meaningful detour in that part of downtown…
