OAK ISLAND, N.C. (WECT) – An Oak Island police officer was taken to the hospital and later released after he was struck by a vehicle while investigating multiple illegally parked cars on the G.V. Barbee Bridge (NC 133), according to the Oak Island Police Department.
Police said that around 9:24 p.m. Saturday, July 4, Officer Raymond Holleman stopped to investigate several vehicles parked along the bridge as people watched the City of Southport fireworks display. Officers said some of the vehicles were obstructing portions of the travel lane, creating a significant hazard.
Police said Officer Holleman had activated his emergency blue lights and ensured there was space to safely conduct the stop when, as he was exiting his patrol car, he was struck by a Ford Bronco driven by Jennifer Bradshaw of Southport.
