Taylor Swift’s longtime mentor and former bodyguard, Kirk Schwabe, passed away from renal cancer on the very day the pop superstar married NFL star Travis Kelce.
Swift, 36, and Kelce, also 36, tied the knot on the evening of July 3 at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. The couple confirmed their marriage around 7:30 p.m., as celebratory messages appeared on jumbotron screens outside the venue.
While friends and family gathered to celebrate the newlyweds, Schwabe, 69, quietly passed away. Schwabe taught criminal justice to Taylor at Henderson High School in Nashville between 2004 and 2006.
When her music career took off in 2009, he transitioned from teacher to her personal bodyguard, following the Swift family’s request. After several years, he stepped away from the role, citing burnout but always expressing deep affection for Taylor.
His wife, Janet Schwabe, shared with The Telegraph that Kirk treated Taylor “like he did his daughters,” underscoring the close bond they shared. Their daughter Sarah also paid tribute, noting her father’s unique ability to make people feel valued and protected-a legacy he leaves behind.
Taylor honored Kirk’s influence in a subtle way, naming her character’s teacher “Mr. Schwabe” in the 2010 romantic comedy Valentine’s Day.
In a recent interview prior to the wedding, Kirk reflected on encouraging a young Taylor by telling her, “You are it,” recognizing her destined stardom early on. He expressed confidence in her choice of Travis Kelce as husband, trusting her judgment completely.
The wedding itself was a star-studded event officiated by actor Adam Sandler. Eschewing tradition, the couple opted out of a conventional wedding party.
Instead, Taylor’s brother Austin served as her Man of Honor, with Travis’s brother Jason standing as Best Man. Both bride and groom wore coordinated ensembles designed by Jonathan Anderson, Creative Director at Dior.
Kirk Schwabe’s passing on such a significant day serves as a poignant reminder of the deep connections behind the scenes in Taylor Swift’s life and career.
