A German soccer fan attending the World Cup in the United States found himself unexpectedly moved by his experience, expressing a newfound affection for the country during a recent television interview.
Sebastian Krause traveled from Germany to the U.S. for the tournament, initially harboring reservations based on the negative news he had heard about America. However, his time in the country proved to be quite the opposite.
In an interview with NBC 10 Boston, Sebastian became visibly emotional as he reflected on his visit. After wiping away tears with his soccer jersey, he shared, “I fell in love with this country, and this was so emotional, I even cried in the stadium.” He admitted that before arriving, he had some fears about traveling to the U.S., citing concerns about safety and reports of shootings.
Footage aired during the interview showed Sebastian being warmly welcomed by local Bostonians as they drove him to his hotel, prompting him to exclaim, “America is great.” The reporter noted that Sebastian seemed more upset about leaving the U.S. than about Germany’s exit from the World Cup. He planned to spend the Fourth of July weekend in Washington, D.C., before returning home.
Summing up his experience, Sebastian said, “Americans are not rude, Germans are not rude, if we are together, we can achieve great things.”
This heartfelt encounter comes amid optimistic predictions from German fans about the U.S. team’s performance in the tournament. Before the United States’ heartbreaking loss to Paraguay, Express US Sports spoke with supporters outside Boston’s Gillette Stadium, who expressed confidence in the American team’s potential.
One fan wearing a Germany jersey remarked, “I think the way to the semifinal is open for the U.S., but all games will be tough. They have a lot of chances.”
Another added, “I’m pretty sure they will get to the quarters, maybe the semis. But my favorites this year are Argentina, France, and Spain – all very strong.”
Among the crowd, one supporter reflected on the group stage results: “They had a tough group – not easy. They lost to Turkey, which doesn’t matter, like us against Ecuador.
But they won 4-1 against Paraguay, very good. Maybe quarterfinals, but no more.”
Sebastian’s emotional response and the encouraging outlook from fans highlight the unifying power of sport and the unexpected connections it can foster across cultures.
