Harlem schools launch solar project to fund scholarships

Harlem School District and New Energy Equity celebrated the launch of a solar project expected to power 1,002 homes a year and provide scholarships to students.

The 5.5-megawatt solar project, built on district-owned land in Machesney Park, Illinois, will generate 8.3 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, according to a news release from New Energy Equity.

The project is operated by New Energy Equity, a subsidiary of ALLETE Inc. It will allow ComEd customers to enroll in community solar and receive credits on their electricity bills, reducing their energy costs.
