A Fresno County police K-9 named Santi tragically lost his life in a suspected hit-and-run incident after being frightened by illegal fireworks on July 4, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. Saturday in Clovis, when an off-duty deputy was outside with Santi, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois who had served with the department for four years.
As Santi went to relieve himself in the backyard, nearby aerial mortar fireworks exploded, startling him and causing him to panic. In his fear, Santi jumped over a fence and ran off.
The deputy immediately pursued him, calling for him to return.
Unfortunately, Santi continued to flee and was later found severely injured on a nearby road. He was rushed to a veterinary hospital but was pronounced dead.
Witnesses at the scene told investigators with the Clovis Police Department that Santi had likely been struck by a vehicle that then fled the scene. The investigation into the suspected hit-and-run remains ongoing.
The sheriff’s office used the incident to highlight the dangers posed by illegal fireworks, emphasizing their potential to cause fires, injuries, and distress to animals, as well as disruption to the community’s quality of life.
“Law enforcement and firefighters constantly warn residents about the dangers of using illegal fireworks, which can result in fires, injuries, distress to animals, and an overall disruption to a person’s quality of life,” the department stated. “Sadly, it is not enough of a deterrent for some as blatant disregard for the law continues.”
The heartbreaking news sparked a strong response on social media, with hundreds of comments expressing condolences and support for both Santi and his handler. Many users defended the deputy against criticism, noting that the tragedy was not due to any fault of the officer.
One commenter wrote, “The victim blaming on this thread is really something else. RIP Santi and condolences to his human partner.”
Another added, “Such a loss for the community. Unintentional things happen.
First responders show up for us no matter what.”
Others reflected on the emotional toll such incidents take on working dogs, acknowledging that despite training, fear can overwhelm them. Several voices called for a reconsideration of traditional fireworks displays, advocating for drone shows as a safer, more humane alternative.
“No more fireworks. Drones instead,” one user suggested, while another commented, “Can we have a year without fireworks…a massive drone show would be FANTASTIC!”
As the investigation continues, the loss of Santi serves as a somber reminder of the risks illegal fireworks pose to both people and animals alike.
