LAFAYETTE, La. (NEWS 15) — A man accused of a carjacking, high-speed chase, and shootout with police last month escaped from St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office custody at a Lafayette hospital before being recaptured by Lafayette police a short time later.
Dusty Johnson, 35, of Crowley, was booked on new charges of aggravated battery on an officer, home invasion, simple battery, carjacking, aggravated flight from an officer, and aggravated escape. His bond is set at $275,000.
A St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman reported that deputies were transporting Johnson to the hospital for a medical issue when he allegedly beat the transporting deputy and stole the transport van. Authorities said the van was abandoned not far from the hospital and Lafayette police later found Johnson at a broken-into home on South Orange Street…
