LOS ANGELES – Prosecutors say labor traffickers and employers accused of stealing wages will no longer be able to hide behind county lines under a new California law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Assembly Bill 1583, co-sponsored by the Los Angeles County and Sonoma County district attorneys’ offices, expands where labor trafficking and wage theft cases can be prosecuted when alleged crimes span multiple jurisdictions. The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2027.
The measure allows prosecutors to bring cases in the county where a victim lived when the crime occurred, where the victim was present when the employment agreement was entered into, where any part of the work was performed or where the business operated…
