When Megan Slaton moved to New Iberia four months ago, she didn’t expect her rental home to come with a new best friend — an exceptionally vocal but affectionate stray cat she named Yeller. The quiet street is home to several stray cats, each with its own personality: some fluffy, some small, some adventurous and others more reserved.
Residents on East Washington Street care for and love all of the neighborhood cats, so Slaton was shocked and heartbroken when Yeller appeared crying in pain and limping on a swollen, broken leg.
The news was even more heartbreaking: Yeller hadn’t been hit by a car or injured in a fight. Someone had shot him. The gunshot shattered his front leg beyond repair, and veterinarians had to amputate it…
