Bexar County will pay $3.7 million to Kerr and Burnet counties for housing hundreds of Bexar County inmates over the past nine months when the county jail has run out of space.
County commissioners voted Tuesday to pay the two counties for the Bexar County inmates in their jails since October. The payments are another result of chronic overcrowding at the county jail.
The Bexar County Adult Detention Center has roughly 5,000 beds, and on a given day, its capacity is often at or near that number. When the jail is short on beds, the county often sends people who have been convicted of a crime and are awaiting transfer to a state prison to nearby counties…
