Historic naval training vessel with Lorain ties to be repurposed, rededicated in Cleveland

For the first time since 2020, a historic piece of United States and Lorain County naval history returned to the water as the S/V Intrepid was lowered into Cleveland Harbor on Tuesday afternoon.

Guided by another boat, the 63-year-old vessel then traveled westward, up the Cuyahoga River and was delivered to the Riverfront Yacht Service. There, a nearly yearlong restoration process through the Intrepid Sailing Corps will now begin.

After the Intrepid’s restoration, local youths will have an opportunity to glimpse not only at history, but of the skills and lessons learned on a ship, according to Lawrence J. Amato, deputy director of the Lorain County Veterans Commission…
