Friday marked Redstone Arsenal’s 85th anniversary, but 85 years ago two Huntsville communities were displaced for the start of construction.
“In 1941, the Army acquired 32,244 acres to establish Huntsville Arsenal and 4,000 acres for the Redstone Ordnance plant. Initially known as the Redstone Ordnance Plant, the new post was redesignated Redstone Arsenal on Feb. 26, 1943,” an excerpt from “The People Who Lived on the Land That is Now Redstone Arsenal” by Beverly Curry reads.
The aforementioned acres of land were bought while the Army originally sought 1,200 acres of land where the Tennessee River and the railroad ran in the same area…
