MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – The plan to sink the historic SS United States as what Okaloosa County leaders have promoted as the world’s largest artificial reef is still ongoing, as officials pursue a key permit modification needed before the massive ocean liner can be deployed offshore.
Okaloosa County officials say they’re requesting a modification to an artificial reef permit that has been in place for roughly 30 years. The update would allow the ship to be placed in deeper water and would adjust the required clearance above the reef, changes leaders say are necessary to accommodate the vessel’s size.
