BBC Radio 1 host Greg James recently shared the unexpectedly low-key way he discovered he had been invited to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s high-profile wedding-and why he and his wife, author Bella Mackie, initially doubted the invite was legitimate.
During the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show on July 8, James revealed that rather than receiving a traditional, ornate invitation, the wedding invite arrived as a simple digital link sent to his phone in the middle of the night amid a storm. At the time, James was preparing for a 620-mile charity bike ride with Prince William for Comic Relief and set the news aside, turning off his phone to focus. “I basically thought, ‘I can’t deal with that now, it’s too mad,’” he said, explaining that he kept the invitation a secret for the entire week.
What added to the skepticism was the absence of a physical invitation. James admitted that both he and Bella questioned whether the invite was a prank or scam until they actually arrived at the event.
“Until we were in there, we weren’t sure it was real. We thought maybe we had made a big trip for nothing,” he said.
Not all invited celebrities attended the wedding at Madison Square Garden. Singer James Taylor disclosed at a recent concert that he and his wife, Kim, declined due to his annual Fourth of July concert at Tanglewood, though he extended his well wishes to the couple.
Television host Ryan Seacrest also had to cancel despite initially accepting; he cited prior commitments to Disney’s Fourth of July special but expressed gratitude for the invitation. Meanwhile, Harry Styles and Zoe Kravitz were absent as well, likely due to Styles’ ongoing tour commitments in London.
