Oakland police investigate death of man found shot near 580 entrance

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — A 47-year-old City of Oakland employee, Jermaine Newton, was killed in East Oakland early Tuesday morning while walking his dog. Police responded to reports of a man down near Old Quarry Loop and Leona Drive, blocks from Newton’s home.

Newton worked as a gardener for the City of Oakland’s Public Works Parks and Trees division, having joined the department in 2022. The incident occurred around 6:15 a.m. near the Edwards Avenue on-ramp to Interstate 580, marking the 27th homicide reported in Oakland this year.
