Rory McIlroy Faces Tough Question From Former Agent About His Game

Rory McIlroy’s former agent, Andrew “Chubby” Chandler, has sparked a debate by suggesting that the four-time major champion might have become a “one-course pony” after a relatively quiet spell following his second Masters victory.

Chandler, who guided McIlroy during his early professional years before their split in 2011, remains an outspoken observer of the Northern Irishman’s career. He praised McIlroy’s mastery of Augusta National, where Rory finally exorcised the ghosts of his infamous 2011 collapse and went on to claim the Green Jacket twice, completing his career Grand Slam in 2025 and defending the title successfully last April.

However, Chandler points to McIlroy’s struggles at the other major championships, noting that while a top-10 finish at the PGA Championship is respectable, it fell short of expectations given Rory’s position entering the final round. Similarly, at the U.S. Open last month, McIlroy showed promise but faltered on the weekend, particularly with his wedge play-a surprising weakness for a player of his caliber.

“Augusta is tailor-made for Rory McIlroy,” Chandler explained. “When he led there in 2011 and fell apart on the back nine, it wasn’t shocking because his ball striking suited that course.

With more experience then, he would have likely won by a comfortable margin. But I’m puzzled by his struggles when there’s wind and firm greens.

You get that at Augusta too.”

Chandler elaborated on McIlroy’s uncharacteristic issues at the U.S. Open: “His wedge play was off in spots, which didn’t match what we know about his skills. It was odd to watch.”

The pointed question Chandler raised-whether McIlroy is now a “one-course pony”-may sting for the golfer, who has worked hard to prove his versatility across varied courses and conditions. Still, Chandler remains optimistic about Rory’s potential for more major victories, especially if he can capitalize on softer greens. He also acknowledged that after achieving the career Grand Slam, maintaining that hunger can be a challenge.

“He’s won a lot, and his chipping has slipped, which can happen after reaching such heights,” Chandler said. “But I’d be surprised if he doesn’t claim another major title.”

McIlroy will have the chance to silence critics and show his all-around prowess when he tees off at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale next week.
