Jim Kerr of Simple Minds Celebrates 67 Years and New Album Ahead

Additional Coverage:

Jim Kerr, the unmistakable voice behind Simple Minds, celebrates his 67th birthday on July 9, marking nearly 50 years at the forefront of one of rock’s most enduring bands. Since forming Simple Minds in Glasgow in 1977 with guitarist Charlie Burchill, Kerr has steered the group from its post-punk roots to international stardom, with over 60 million albums sold worldwide.

While American audiences often associate the band with their chart-topping hit “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” from The Breakfast Club, Simple Minds’ success encompasses a rich catalog of classics. Hits like “Alive and Kicking,” “Waterfront,” “Promised You a Miracle,” “Someone Somewhere in Summertime,” “Glittering Prize,” and the UK No. 1 single “Belfast Child” have solidified their place in rock history. The band also secured five UK No. 1 albums, becoming the most commercially successful Scottish band of the 1980s.

Kerr’s approach to his music career has always been defined by a refusal to stand still. During a 2010 interview promoting his solo album *Lostboy!

AKA Jim Kerr*, he shared his guiding philosophy: “Stay still and you calcify. Calcify and you die.”

He emphasized the importance of embracing change and taking control, rather than simply coasting through life.

The solo project itself was a way for Kerr to reconnect with the ambitious young songwriter he once was. Reflecting on the album, he described it as nostalgic, capturing a moment when he was “not quite a boy but not a man either.” Yet, Kerr was clear that he never intended to start a new band or release a straightforward solo album-his loyalty to Simple Minds remains unwavering.

This dedication continues today. Earlier this year, Kerr announced that Simple Minds had completed recording their 20th studio album, with a tour planned for Australia and New Zealand in 2027.

Writing music, he explained on social media, cannot be forced; it requires patience and presence. “Almost 50 years later from first learning to write those first songs, Simple Minds are currently putting the finishing touches on our 20th album…

Keep the faith!”

Five decades on, Kerr and Burchill still lead the band they founded as teenagers. Jim Kerr’s distinctive voice isn’t just a relic of the past-it’s very much alive, as he and Simple Minds continue to write the next chapter in their remarkable story.
