The Wellness Rundown: How to beat the heat

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – In the latest edition of the Wellness Rundown, KAMR Local 4 News’ Anchor Mari Ferrel talked with Haley Sparks from Rebuilt Life Coaching about the dangers of the summertime heat and how to best prepare for it.

Extreme heat is the leading weather-related cause of death. The reason why is because it is considered a “silent killer”. Most people don’t realize the symptoms until it’s too late. The risks of summertime heat include:

  • Heat exhaustion
  • Heat stroke
  • Electrolyte imbalance
  • Medication interference
  • Sunburn
  • Dehydration

The most important tip is to stay hydrated. During the episode, Sparks and Ferrel talk about how much water we need in a day. Another way to stay hydrated is by eating water-rich fruits. Fruits such as watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, and oranges.

Sparks shared a fun popsicle recipe to get the whole family involved. The recipe includes:

  • 2 cups of fruit
  • 1 cup of liquid (water, coconut water, fruit juice, or milk)
  • 2 tablespoons of sweetener (honey, agave, natural sweetener of choice)

If you don’t have any popsicle molds, Sparks shared that you can use small paper cups. To prevent fruit from sinking, you can fill the mold with liquid first, then drop your chopped fruit in before inserting the stick. When ready to eat, make sure to run the mold under warm water for 10-15 seconds.
