Princess Diana Said It Wasnt Camilla Who Ended Her Marriage to Prince Charles

A royal author has offered a new perspective on the dissolution of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage, suggesting that Camilla Parker Bowles was not the primary cause.

Ingrid Seward, drawing on her extensive experience covering the royal family, shared her views during a 2025 episode of A Right Royal Podcast. She expressed the belief that the breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage was not simply due to Charles’ alleged affair with Camilla.

Speaking to podcast hosts Emily Nash and Andrea Caamano, Seward recounted a conversation she had with Diana shortly before the princess’s tragic death in August 1997. According to Seward, Diana told her, “It wasn’t Camilla that ruined our marriage. It was the people around Charles.”

Seward reflected on this remark, admitting she never fully understood its meaning but recalled Diana’s father, John Spencer, commenting on the challenges posed by the royal household’s environment.

Reports have indicated that Diana often felt isolated from Charles’ inner circle, finding his friends and staff to be traditional and unwelcoming to her more modern outlook. The couple’s significant age gap reportedly contributed to their incompatibility, and Charles’ staff were known for their unwavering loyalty to the prince, frequently treating Diana with a cold distance.

Diana, who married into the royal family at just 20 years old after being part of their circle for much of her life, faced a stark contrast with Charles, who was 32 and well-settled in his ways. At the time of their marriage, Charles was reportedly seeking a mother for his future children, setting a complex foundation for their relationship.

Royal biographer Penny Junor has suggested that both Charles and Diana sensed the challenges ahead from the moment they married. Despite his marriage to Diana, Charles maintained a close friendship with Camilla, whom he regarded as a dear companion. While Charles and Camilla remained platonic for the first six years of his marriage, they eventually rekindled their romantic relationship by 1987.

The marriage produced two sons, Princes William and Harry, born in 1982 and 1984, and the couple experienced periods of happiness. However, mutual infidelities ultimately led to the breakdown of their union.

Charles and Diana separated in 1992, and in a candid 1995 BBC interview, Diana famously remarked that “there were three of us in this marriage,” alluding to Charles’ relationship with Camilla. The divorce was finalized in 1996, closing a tumultuous chapter in royal history.
