A nearly 100-year-old Indianapolis estate built for an early Eli Lilly executive has hit the market for nearly $8 million, making it the most expensive home for sale in the Indiana capital.
It’s the first time in nearly 50 years that the Tudor revival mansion has been for sale. It was built in 1928 for Nicholas H. Noyes and his wife, Marguerite Lilly Noyes, the daughter of a cousin of the pharmaceutical company founder. Noyes joined Eli Lilly in 1910 and became vice president and director by 1913. The couple were also prominent philanthropists in the area.
When the Noyeses died, they left the property to nearby Butler University, who put it up for sale when they realized they had no use for it, according to Eileen O’Brien of Century 21 Scheetz, who is both the co-listing agent and the daughter of the late owners, J. Thomas and Joan O’Brien. She said another buyer initially purchased the estate from the university, but her father quickly bought it from them in 1978, making the O’Briens only the second family to live in the home…
