Congressman Demands WNBA Explain Why Star Player Faces Harsh Treatment

An Indiana lawmaker is seeking answers from the WNBA regarding the treatment of star player Caitlin Clark, who appears to face harsher physical play and taunting compared to her peers. Clark, a prominent figure in the league, has been targeted with numerous hard fouls and aggressive trash talk during games.

This concern has prompted several members of Congress to send a formal letter to WNBA Commissioner Kathy Engelbert, demanding accountability and clarity on the matter. The letter highlights that Clark, described as “the face of your league,” has been subjected to “repeated acts of unnecessary physical hostility and violence.”

Republican Representative Marlin Stutzman of Indiana expressed particular frustration over a recent incident where Alyssa Thomas struck Clark in the throat, resulting in only a one-game suspension. Stutzman called the punishment insufficient and criticized the league for sidelining Clark during a game against the Phoenix Mercury, suggesting fear of on-court incidents may be limiting Clark’s playing time.

Speaking on Outkick’s “Don’t @ Me” with Dan Dakich, Stutzman urged the WNBA to respond openly to the letter and commit to taking strong measures to protect players. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a competitive yet professional environment through better oversight by referees, coaches, and league officials.

The lawmakers’ letter underscores Commissioner Engelbert’s responsibility to ensure all players compete in a safe and professional setting, free from violence, discrimination, or retaliation. It also supports investigations by federal agencies if there is evidence of a hostile work environment that violates civil rights laws.

Concluding the letter, the members of Congress stressed the league’s unique position to inspire young female athletes but warned that inadequate protection of its top stars undermines this potential. They called on the WNBA to do more for its players and fans alike.

In recent remarks, Clark herself has called on the league to enhance its efforts in safeguarding players both on and off the court, highlighting ongoing concerns about player safety and well-being.
