Preserve Murrells Inlet, Georgetown Co. reach deal to improve Inlet water quality

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — A local environmental group and Georgetown County have reached an agreement aimed at strengthening stormwater management and improving water quality protections in and around the Murrells Inlet estuary.

Preserve Murrells Inlet, Inc. said the agreement calls for the county to create an advisory committee that will recommend remedial projects and policy changes to address pollutants in the Murrells Inlet Estuary and achieve measurable improvements in water quality countywide. The county also committed $50,000 toward a comprehensive study intended to guide future improvements.

According to the South Carolina Environmental Law Project, representatives of the organization and Georgetown County entered into the agreement to evaluate, address and improve the county’s management of its Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) involving fecal coliform bacterial issues and other sources of pollution in the estuary…
