U.S. 1 night paving starts Sunday, and Lower Bucks commuters should plan around a week of overnight lane closures. PennDOT crews will pave U.S. 1 in both directions between Fairhill Avenue and the Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange from Sunday, July 13 through Friday, July 18, with closures running 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night.
What to expect
The work zone cuts through Bensalem and Middletown townships and ends at the Turnpike interchange by Trevose, which means the nightly squeeze will touch nearly every commuter who uses the corridor between Philadelphia and Lower Bucks. PennDOT is urging motorists to allow extra travel time and warns that all work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled if conditions turn.
Daytime lanes are expected to remain open, with the closures limited to the overnight window. If you drive the corridor for early shifts, the 6 a.m. reopening is the number that matters.
The bigger project
This week of paving is one phase of PennDOT’s $116 million U.S. 1 improvement contract, which is reconstructing and widening a roughly three-mile stretch of the highway in Bucks County, upgrading interchanges, bridges and drainage along one of the region’s most heavily traveled corridors.
